Happy to Combine Shipping on items purchased and shipped together. Whether for gift giving or keeping for yourself, this beautiful set will be a lovely addition to any collection!! The entire tower is in Wonderful Antique Condition! There are no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. However I have been told that the production quality and the absence of a country of origin or import marking could quite possibly date the piece prior to the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 – what a treasure this could be!!! I have not been able to get anything specific on a date. All the pieces have a slight lip to nestle each piece. Each of the 3 center dishes are just about 2” high and have a slight arch in the center (to keep juices from pooling). The molded feet raise the base piece about ½” off the table. The unit measures just about 10” in height x 5-1/2” square. (I have tried several translation sites and none have recognized all the markings completely.) The back displays two markings…… a large hand painted symbol done in black and a red square stamp. The initial design appears to be transfers or stamps that were then hand painted. The Japanese refer to the crane as the “bird of happiness”, while the sides continue unassumingly with the scenery. As a result, in the Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture, the crane represents good fortune and longevity. The front of the piece shows a crane In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years. The correct term for the porcelain boxes is actually “DANJO”, while “JUBAKO” refers to the lacquered trays. The entire set is made of ceramic and when nested together create this beautiful piece of art – although it is still useable for food storage & serving, it is also perfect for display alone or as a practical piece for storing small treasures bathroom necessities, office supplies, hair accessories or how about a unique jewelry box (you may want to drop in a piece of velvet for that option)!įrom “” - The Japanese jubako box is a practical means to stack the bento trays making them more compact and keeping food warm.
